What to Declutter in August
Here are 5 quick areas to tackle this month — no guilt, no pressure, just a little end-of-summer clarity.
1. Expired sunscreen and bug spray
Check the labels — most sunscreen has a shelf life of about 1–2 years. If it’s expired, toss it. No need to store a half-empty bottle until next summer.
2. Summer accessories you didn’t use
Floppy hats that never got worn, broken flip-flops, stretched-out bathing suits — if it didn’t serve you this summer, it probably won’t next year either.
3. Outdoor toys and gear
Water balloons, sidewalk chalk stubs, cracked buckets, and other worn-out gear — now’s the time to clear out the broken or forgotten stuff before storing what’s still good.
4. Your car
Summer often turns the car into a catch-all. Do a quick sweep for wrappers, old water bottles, melted crayons (ask me how I know), and that one flip-flop that’s been under the seat for weeks.
5. Paper clutter
If you have kids, you might still have end-of-school-year papers hanging around. Clear out old artwork, school forms, or permission slips. File what matters, recycle the rest.
